You may have heard of some, if not all, of these resources, but as always, I’ll give my thoughts on each site, including opinionated pros and cons. What is the big difference between these online sites and the podcasts I mentioned last week? Well, for one, they tend to be a bit more interactive by allowing you access to diversified student reviews and/or by gathering a bit of information from you that they can use to generate a broad college list for you. In any case, add these resources to your search process; don’t just use them instead of the podcasts or other resources. Trust me, you’ll want all the tools you can get your hands on in order to help you make the most informed college decision tailored to all of your needs and wants. Ready? Let’s take a look! If you are looking for a way to talk to someone who has experience with the school outside of the university employees in the admissions office, this is a great resource! For each college in the database, Unigo offers easy-to-find and organized reviews in response to identical survey questions that the website poses to each reviewer. Also, there are polls available on topics you won’t necessary find in a college’s brochure, such as political activism, alcohol use, arts culture, and intellectual life. Special bonus(es): Unigo is also a great place to look for scholarships to fund your college experience! It has an extensive directory of scholarship applications to help you pay for each year of college. Minor drawback: The college search options are limited to US schools. CollegeTimes Looking for even more reviews? CollegeTimes has a database of uncensored reviews for the largest collection of institutions anywhere on the web, from Boise to Bangladesh! Current college attendees or alumni can go on this website to truly report the nitty gritty of their experience, without any filter or policing. You will get different reviews both in content and in tone on this particular site, so be sure to use it in tandem with Unigo. CollegeTimes also offers a college search tool with a few specialized areas, like funding types (non-profit for-profit) and sect/religion. To start off, this site takes a special look at estimated cost of living per semester. â€Å"Cost of living† is what I call the extra cost of each semester outside of the tuition price tag. You’re going to need books, right? What about other supplies to get through the semester? Those elements are important when it comes to calculating the entire cost of your college experience. Furthermore, this website goes much more into detail about financial aid packages per income bracket. Many families appreciate that for each college, there is a â€Å"net price† tab that shows the approximate price a family paid per semester for multiple years based on their annual reported income. If there is anything your parents will be extremely interested in knowing, it is this specific fact! The African Lion The lion is known as king of the jungle because of its huge size and ferocious appearance, the most common type of lion is the African lion. The African lion has the genus species Panthera (panther, leopard) leo (lion). Panthera leo has the common name lion and comes from the felidae family. Panthera leo is in the mammali class and has the order carnivora(Bush Gardens, 1996). Lions live in sub-Saharan Africa in grasslands and semi-arid plains in prides which is a group of lions that live in the same area and share hunting duties(Bush Gardens,1996). Lions are the only truly social cat species, usually a pride consists of two males, seven females, and any amount of cubs. The lionesses are usually sisters or cousins that have all been together since birth. The average mature male stands four feet at the shoulder, weighs in around 450 pounds and is around eight and a half feet long plus his tail. The female on the other hand is considerably smaller and weighs in at a average of three hundred pounds. Lions usually have a light or dark brown plain spotless coat, white coated lions are sometimes found in southern Africa but they are not true albinos (African Savannah). The male lion reaches sexual maturity at the age of five years and the lioness- which is the female lion, reaches its sexual maturity at the age of four. Lionesses in a pride usually enter breeding season together and later give birth at the same time which allows the lionesses to share nursing and other maternal duties. The lioness is pregnant between 98 and 105 days until it gives birth to a average of 3 cubs, unfortunately only one of those cubs will survive the first year of life due to the harsh conditions in their habitats (Bush Gardens, 1996). At birth the cubs are blind and move very slow. The cubs weigh less than five pounds (Wild Animals) and are marked with spots which sometimes stay on their legs and belly until they are fully grown. (African Savannah). When the cubs reach five months of age, they weigh an average of fifty pounds but they still act playful like a kitten. In most cases, when the cub reaches nine months of age, their spots disappear. When the cubs come to the age of a year and a half, the mother teaches them to hunt (Comptons 1993, 1994). The male lions have a brown mane which grows darker and fuller as the lion ages (African Savannah) and at the age of three the mane slowly starts to show up. The average lion in the wild that lives past the age of one lives between 15 and 18 years and reaches its prime or time it is the strongest at the age of eight (African Savannah). Lions eat a variety of different prey and usually hunt at night(Comptons,1993, 1994-African Savannah). They prefer to eat wildebeast more than anything else, unfortunately they can only do so when migration brings the herds through the prides range. When the wildebeast herds are not migrating they eat buffalo, zebra, antelope, giraffe, and warthogs (African Savannah). When prey cant be caught, lions will steal food from other animals-usually from the hyenas. If absolutely no food can be found, lions will have to go to a last resort of eating snakes, termites, peanuts, fruits, and even rotten wood (Wild Animals). Although only one out of four hunting events is successful, dominant males always eat first, lionesses next, and the cubs are forced to fight for scraps and leftovers (Bush Gardens, 1996). Due to the fact the lion is inactive up to twenty-one hours a day and does all their hunting at night, they have to be able to see at night (Bush Gardens, 1996). The size of lions eyes are bigger than humans and lions only need one sixth of the amount of light humans need to be able to see (Garman, 1997). This state of the industry has been affecting the US governments headed by Bill Clinton as well as the Bush administration when it came into the White House in 2001. Such a trend in the domestic steel industry has been the result of the foreign imports which had been unfairly priced. In order to make the industry back to its normal position of profit-making, the representatives of the steel industry put forward before the Clinton   administration for Section 201 action, which is a trade ruling, which if proved to be successful would permit the President to bring about a steel quota or other me thods of far-reaching relief for the industry. However various critics of such relief measures stated that such measures would lead to misplacement as well as unjustified relief. Various analysts of the steel industry stated that such a situation of the US steel firms were because of the increased supply capacity present throughout the world and in US and also because various economists and consumers of steel had pointed out that cheap foreign steel was in fact good for US and the provision of quotas would affect trade retaliation. There was opinions as of the nature that if steel quotas was imposed by the US government it would tend to affect the export of steel from other countries which were actually depending on steel exports for the progress of their economy and would only be advantageous to the steel industry affecting the broader US economy. The foreign steel makers were of the view that the situation of the US steel industry was as a result of increased competition among the domestic firms and also because of an absence of consolidation. As the Clinton administration left without bringing about the case for Section 201 and the Bush administration was pressurized to bring about a comprehensive 201 trade investigation, the decisions of the Bush administration was expected to have wide-ranging effects for the steel industry of the country, for the entire US economy and for the country’s link with other foreign partners. When Bush administration came into power in 2001, even though the Steel Workers Union and Congressional Steel Caucus did not attempt to establish relationship with the President, they made all efforts in order to bring about protection for the industry. However it was expected that there would be attempts at promoting policies for free trade and that Bush would not allow for section 201 for protection of the steel industry. By March 2001, a broad-based coalition of steel associations emphasized for a comprehensive relief package for the declining steel industry and started to request the administration to bring about the case for section 201 or to find other measures which were compatible with the WTO regulations to tighten the imports into the country. There was a great demand for implementing section 201 as other measures of dumping cases was not proving to be effective. Even though it was expected that Bush administration would not implement the case for section 201, on 5 June, 2001, President Bush to the surprise of all and go by going against the free trade principles of the Republican Party, announced that his administration would bring out a case of section 201 for 33 kinds of steel imports. However this attempt of bringing about a case of section 201 was being criticized as being yielding into the pressure of the unions and industry. There was also criticism that such a move for section 201 would affect US consumers as well as steel consuming industries by putting a restriction on importing steel.   Critics argued that subsidies and protection would not create facilities for competitive industries. There was criticism that Bush was implementing the policy so as to garner support before the November mid-term elections and positioning Bush for the 2004 presidential elections. Such a move for section 201 also created dissatisfaction with the for eign trading partners, especially, EU. However Bush administration knew very well that the case for section 201 would ultimately violate the provisions of WTO law. And as a result the WTO dispute panel in May 2003 ruled that the safeguards being put forward by the US in all of the 10 types of steel imports were considered to be illegal. Later this ruling was also upheld by the appellate body of the WTO and this created appeals from foreign trade experts, members of the Congress, steel makers as well as steel union representatives. But Bush administration stood silent on the issue. However when the EU started its moves of retaliation, Bush administration was forced to terminate section 201, after a 20-month long period of tariffs against steel import. Such a move was considered to have brought an end to efforts of consolidation of the steel industry by the steel unions and on the other hand was the decision was upheld by the critics of section 201 that it would pave a way for free-trade efforts to promote the steel industry to be competitive. This case study shows the attempts at protecting the steel industry by the US government with measures at curtailing steel imports such as dumping which when proved ineffective being altered with the measure of section 201 so as to promote the domestic steel industry. These measures had to be adopted as the steel industry was badly hit by declining prices, falling profits and increased imports, and the Government had to intervene in order to protect and promote the domestic steel industry.

This is the first set of prophecies the witches made and the start to Macbeth’s downfall. What the witches done to Macbeth with these prophecies to make him commence his downfall was they filled his head with these positive flattering things that made him want to go to extreme measures just to become what the witches proclaimed would happen. Proof that this first set of prophecies commenced his downfall is once king Duncan had named malcom to be king apposed to Macbeth, Macbeth then considered the idea that he should murder Duncan to become king. The second set of prophecies given to Macbeth appeared as apparitions by the three witches and each apparition gave Macbeth a different prophecy. The first prophecy is an armed head which tells Macbeth to beware of Macduff â€Å" Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff. Beware the thane of Fife. Dismiss me. Enough. † (4. 1. 74-75). The second apparition appeared as a bloody child who tells Macbeth the only person who can harm him is a man not born of a woman. â€Å" Be bloody, bold, and resolute. Laugh to scorn/The power of man, for none of woman born/Shall harm Macbeth. † (4. 1. 81-83). The final apparition summoned by the witches was a crowned child holding a tree that states Macbeth will not be killed until the woods of birnam are at Dunsinane Hill. These summons created by the witches are a big part in Macbeth’s downfall because they gave him more confidence that he would not be killed. Macbeth believed that these prophecies were ridiculous and that it was impossible for him to happen although he did not think them through because all of these prophecies came true in the end. Although the witches gave Macbeth these prophecies making him over confident and giving him the idea to kill Duncan they are not the only ones to blame, Macbeth’s wife Lady Macbeth also played a big role in the downfall of Macbeth by persuading Macbeth to kill King Duncan. She did this by telling him that if the witches prophecies were to come true and he were to become king he must kill those who stood in the way. She then proceeds to question his manhood and makes him feel guilty for her when she says she would kill her own child if she had promised it to her beloved to do it. Although both the witches and Lady Macbeth were contributors to Macbeth’s death they cannot take all the blame for Macbeths death, Macbeth himself plays a big role in the his tragic death. Macbeth knew killing King Duncan was wrong he was always loyal to the king and Duncan trusted Macbeth greatly but he let the witches get into his head and let their prophecies corrupt his mind without no proof saying he had to kill Duncan to become king. Although Lady Macbeth gave him guilt and questioned his manliness he could have told her no he could have told her no and went with what he knew was best. Macbeth’s ambition to hold his spot on the throne was another good reason as to why he died, after killing Duncan Macbeth decided that he should also kill Banquo because Macbeth thought Banquo would suspect him after the prophecies the witches made. This was a mistake by Macbeth because this only made Macbeth more aggressive and his desire to kill stronger. The main mistake Macbeth made was the faith he had towards the prophecies made by the witches, he felt he was invincible. Even once the prophecy about the Birnam Woods reached the castle he belived he could not be killed by anyone because he thought all men were born of a woman. â€Å"Fear not, till Birnam wood/Do come to/Dunsinane†; and now a wood/Comes toward Dunsinane. ’(5. 5. 43-45) â€Å"Thou wast born of woman. /But swords I smile at, weapons laugh to scorn,/Brandished by man that’s of a woman born. (5. 7. 13-15). This confidence followed Macbeth right to his fight against Macduff, once he began to fight with macduff we learn that macduff was actually ripped out of his mothers stomach and not born from the womb making him not born bt a woman. â€Å"Despair thy charm,/And let the angel whom thou still hast served/Tell thee,/Macduff was from his mother’s womb/Untimely ripped. (5. 8. 13-17). Macbeth then accepted his fate and fought Macduff and lost his life. Although there was multiple factors that led to Macbeths demise such as evil witches and a power hungry wife the one who played the biggest role in his death was Macbeth himself. Even though all of the witches prophecies came true there no proof saying they were destined to come true but only that Macbeth caused these prophecies to be true. If Macbeth would have did what he knew was right he would have saved the lives of a lot of people including the wife he loved so dearly.

Numeracy in primary schools Essay -- Economics

Numeracy in primary schools Numeracy is very important in primary schools today, with mental calculations being a central part of the mathematics curriculum. These mental methods of calculation should be encouraged from an early age, mathematics is used in our everyday lives without many of us realising; checking our change at the shops and leaving the house in order to arrive at school on time. It is advised that Numeracy lessons start with a 5-10 minute starter of oral or mental calculation work, working as a whole class to rehearse, sharpen and develop the children’s skills. Various ways can be used to sharpen these skills including counting in steps of different sizes, practising mental calculations and the rapid recall of number facts; this can be done through playing interactive number games ‘a number one less than a multiple of 5’ etc. Mental calculations are introduced to children in the autumn term of year 1 at a basic level of addition and subtraction. In key stage 2 these mental calculations have become more complex; children include multiplication and division according to the National Numeracy Strategy. However, these mental calculation strategies are not as straight forward as just asking the class a question in order to get a response, individualisation or ‘over-differentiation’ in the teaching of mental mathematics has been hailed as a major barrier to the effective learning. It is clear from this statement from Professor David Reynolds that individualisation is indeed an obstacle: â€Å"We’re clear about what went wrong. Methods of teaching introduced in the 70’s and 80’s, had deleterious effects on maths in particular. All the research agrees that the one thing that badly affects p... ...physical development it is up to teachers to help and differentiate class work to coincide with the children’s development. However an alternative to Piaget's’ view of cognitive development was provided by the Russian literary critic and psychologist Vygotsky. He distinguished between lower functions of human psychology like recognizing and sensation, and higher functions like thinking and understanding. According to Vygotsky ‘What a child can do in cooperation today, he can do alone tomorrow’. He talks about the Zone of Proximal Development, which is their level of actual development of their level of potential development, what they can do with help of an instructor. The ZPD is an indicator of the teachability of the child. Vygotsky suggested it gave a better measure of a child’s capacity than any test of current ability, such as an intelligence test. As Chaikin have provided necessary details such as scientific technicalities, knowledge and feelings involved, running down from the role of politics, biographies, competitions, emotions, failures, accomplishments, trials, motives, sacrifices, faults, private thoughts and comments, up to the extent of constructing the blueprint, plans and programs of planetary explorations, his readers might not just be well-informed about it but completely aware of the ins and outs of manned space flight and landing on the moon. Thus, it could also serve as a very rich reference for any research about space technology. Having been read ‘A Man on the Moon’ inspires me not to stop believing of my every potential. As Chaikin discloses man’s unlimited discoveries once ignite and properly supported of external factors, enlightens young minds to seek for the infinity. However, knowing that the final landing, as written on the book, happened decades ago can trigger the notion of stopping one’s eagerness to dream and explore. Personally, I could say that the book is not just a thought-provoking one but heart-stopping as well. With those vivid illustrations of the interviewees that are intelligently interpreted and written by the author, it could make me feel as if I myself have competed for the moon’s flight seat or even touched moon’s face. Therefore, making me feel reviving my innermost interest to liberate my wildest dream of becoming an astronaut is the best proof that this book is truly an amazing masterpiece.
